Nokia just expanded their internet tablet series with a new model called Nokia N810. This model improves on Nokia N800 by integrating a GPS receiver with Wayfinder GPS navigation software, better bluetooth, audio, and video features. Of course the other biggest improvement is the slide out qwerty keyboard which makes typing URLs a whole lot easier.

Other features and specs include a 4.13″ display with 800×480 resolution, Wi-Fi, Mozilla based browser with Ajax and Adobe Flash 9 support, and memory that is expandable upto 10GB.

Nokia N810 will be available in mid November and cost about $480.

Nokia made official that they will be introducing a WiMAX-enabled version of their N800 internet tablet early next year. Intel is also in this with their Baxter Peak WiMax chip, making use of the WiMax service Sprint will make available in select cities.

These next-generation N series will also contain an integrated GPS chip unlike earlier models which were navigation capable but did not integrated its own GPS. There are also rumors that Nokia will also introduce N800’s without WiMAX but only GPS. Will keep an eye on this and keep you updated… via

Review of GPS navigation on Nokia N800

nokia-n800-01.jpg
People at LinuxDevices published a review of the GPS navigation kit for Nokia N800. It sounds like a lot of things went wrong during their review but they still thought it would please casual suburban users who need an automobile navigation system.

Next, we tested the device on a train trip to San Francisco. Even in the skylight-lined observation car, the receiver failed to get a fix on its location. When this pattern repeated itself while walking around San Francisco’s urban canyons, we actually thought we might have received a defective unit. Our ultra-basic $100 monochrome Garmin Etrex worked fine in both situations.

However there were a few positive things about the GPS Navigation Kit for Nokia N800 as well. First off it had an extensive POI library which they think makes $218 price tag worth it. Also the battery is replaceable so if the Li-Ion starts showing poor performance you’ll have the freedom to change it.

The navigation kit consists of the LD-3W bluetooth GPS receiver, 2 GB memory card containing navigation software from Navicore and maps of Europe or North America from TeleAtlas… via

Nokia N800 internet device copied by Chinese

nokia-n800-umpc001.jpg
umpc-001-01.jpgA Chinese company called XIACHAO has a created a product that slightly resembles Nokia’s N800 internet tablet. The Chinese version is quite different though, both in OS and types of applications. For example the Chinese version – which is called UMPC001 – runs on Windows CE 5.0 where as Nokia N800 runs on Linux.

However UMPC001 was able to throw in more hardware components than Finnish. For example, UMPC001 comes with an integrated GPS receiver to offer navigation feature and it also comes with an integrated built camera. Other features include SD/MMC card slot and Wi-Fi just like Nokia N800. In addition UMPC001 also provides applications such as Skype, various games, MSN, Internet Explorer, MS Office, and other multimedia features.

However if we were Nokia we wouldn’t worry too much. It is obvious that the Chinese company did not even bother to provide a picture of their own product -which probably will not even exist until they find a buyer – but went ahead and photoshopped a fake digital camera on top of the device and pasted a screenshot from another Windows device… via
