TomTom cash for clunkers program

tomtom-gps-trade-in
TomTom just started a new trade-in program – kind of similar to the cash for clunkers deal we had here in the U.S. What you need to do is to purchase a new GPS navigation system from TomTom.com, estimate the value of your trade-in using their calculator, print the shipping label and send it in to their warehouse, and finally get your cash back in about 1 to 2 weeks.

We played with the calculator a bit – a Navigon 2100 we have sitting here with no accessories or cables was $35, a higher end Garmin 760 with charger, cables and mounting kits would get you as much as $177. That’s a good trade-in value! The question is would you trade in your Garmin for a Tomtom?

new-york-times-gps-review
New York Times’ Eric Taub just recently reviewed four iPhone GPS apps.

TeleNav’s AT&T Navigator, Alk’s CoPilot Live, Navigon’s MobileNavigator, and TomTom’s iPhone app. I know we’ve talked about all these many times here on Navigadget before but maybe you just want to hear it all over again from NYTimes.

…According to a report from the iSuppli research firm, GPS applications for smartphones are about to explode, growing from 2.5 percent of users today to 10.5 percent in 2013. And half of those will be iPhone owners…

Navigon iPhone car kit due Nov 3?

navigon-iphone-mount

According to twice Navigon is considering releasing the iPhone car kit under their own brand. Earlier news about Navigon car kit were suggesting a partnership with Kensington to manufacture a universal mounting kit that would work with any application. This was supposed to be available at Apple stores starting November 3 but Navigon’s president of the Americas Michael Roach said:

We’re still evaluating the U.S. market … We’re leaving the option open right now…

Kensington announcement was that their universal car kit would cost $39 and could amplify voice directions thanks to its integrated speakers while charging the iPhone. The car kit will have Navigon’s logo on it along with some screenshots on the packaging.

iPhone GPS apps comparison part II

coPilot-gps-navigation
A couple of months ago Gizmodo did a comparison of different GPS navigation applications for the iPhone. They now have a part II for that. This time they’re covering more of the “second tier” applications – just because they’re a bit cheaper, and not as well advertised. Anyhow – we have all the iPhone GPS navigation apps listed here.

The GPS navigation apps reviewed are CoPilot Live from ALK, Gokivo GPS Navigator from NIM, and Sygic.

navigon’s iPhone navigation app now even better

navigon-iphone-traffic
Navigon keeps improving their GPS navigation app for the iPhone. They already added the text-to-speech, iPod controls functions a few weeks ago, and just recently they announced they’d be adding live traffic updates to the already very popular application. Even though it will cost you $25 it is really not that bad considering it is a one time fee.

You can pick up the main navigation application for $90, the live traffic updates for $25, and you’ll have a fully functional GPS navigation system for less than $120. While you’re at it you can also pick up the Navigon car kit but we don’t know how much that will cost just yet.

Navigon iPhone car kit

navigon-car-kit
Navigon is getting ready to release a car kit for the iPhone with charging capabilities as we found out from their FB page. It says the car kit will be available in October this year. And it will only charge and hold your iPhone in place. Do not look for GPS receiver, speaker, microphone, bluetooth here. For those you may keep waiting for the TomTom car kit.

We don’t have any more details on Navigon’s iPhone car kit. We’ll let you know once we find out how much it will cost. We do however know how much Navigon’s iPhone App costs these days: $90.

NAVIGON 8410 and NAVIGON 8450 Live

navigon-8450
We had already announced Navigon 8410 a while ago, but with the IFA 2009 show in Germany it became more official – along with its brother Navigon 8450 Live. The story with these are pretty similar to the Navigon 64xx series. Navigon 8410 will cost 450 Euros and you’ll have to the option to add on the Live module for an extra 100 Euros. The Navigon 8450 Live on the other hand will be offered for 500 Euros. The outrageous Live service still apply after the first three months: 140 Euros for two years, or 80 Euros for one year.

Some of the extras you get on 8410 and 8450 Live that you won’t find on the 63xx series are the enhanced multimedia features, the huge 5″ touch screen with glass surface, and of course the DVB-T antenna for watching digitally broadcast channels.

Navigon 6310 and 6350 Live

navigon-6310-6350
Days like this make us miss Navigon more – since they left North America. Navigon seems to be doing well in Europe though, announcing new products and services left and right (Navigon 1400, 1410; Navigon 2400, 2410). Now we’re talking about Navigon 6310 and 6350 Live; two new GPS navigation systems from the company. Offered with these two new devices is Navigon’s Live service that provides real-time information about the current traffic conditions on the route, find out how many parking spaces are available at a parking lot near you, update you on the weather, let you do Google Local search, and more.

The bad part is the service is only free for the first 3 month. After that to make better use of your Navigon 6310 and 6350 Live you’ll have to shell out EUR 80/year, or EUR 140/2years. The Live services are provided with a SIM card from T-Mobile.

Some other features of NAVIGON 6350 Live and NAVIGON 6310 include the improved voice-command feature, Panorama View3D, Landmark View3D and City View3D; 4.3″, 16:9 format display, chrome edging, NAVIGON MyRoutes, NAVIGON Clever Parking, TMC Routing Info, Spoken TMC, POI Click and Real Road Sign Pro.

NAVIGON 6350 Live costs EUR 350, including the NAVIGON Live module. The NAVIGON 6310 is EUR 300 but you’ll have to retrofit the Live module for an extra EUR 100. The NAVIGON 6310 will be available in a couple of weeks whereas the NAVIGON 6350 Live will come out in October.
