don’t like GPS on your iPhone 3G? consider these options…

British electricpig has an article about alternatives to iPhone 3G. iPhone 3G’s been out for a few days now and we’re not hearing that great things about the GPS functionality – which we know does not provide turn-by-turn directions. Their 3 alternatives are the nuviphone, Nokia N96, and any Windows Mobile with CoPilot Live 7.

Sure, the iPhone 3G has GPS, but with no voice prompts or even proper satnav-style navigation software, it’s left at the mercy of the mobile competition.

Check out these alternatives, they use more than just Google Maps to show your location, so if you’re really looking to replace that satnav with an all-powerful navigation phone, they’ll be right up your street.

Here you can see video of iPhone showing a train getting derailed:

However here is another video that is a little more flattering for iPhone 3G:

Nokia N96 almost out

The latest and greatest from Nokia; N96 is about to be released next month according to this Nokia N96 review. We’ve talked about the device on Navigadget before so we’re sure you’ve all seen some nice pics. But recently Nokia also put up a demonstration site where it shows you how to use most of the functions.

All the demos are made with flash and show everything from inserting a SIM card to using the bluetooth to transfer files.

Price at about 550 €, Nokia N96 features 2.8″ screen, 16GB of memory, 5MP camera, integrated GPS receiver, a microSD card slot (unlike N95), and much more. It even has a digital TV tuner and a little kick stand in the back so you can set it on a table top for your TV viewing pleasure.

With all this features we can’t help but think about the battery life. According to specs posted at Nokia’s website the battery is a BL-5F Nokia battery at 950 mAh. It can give you about 220 minutes of talk time with GSM and 14 hours of audio playback. However, when it comes watching digitally broadcast channels you’ve only got 4 hours.

For more detailed description of the features take a look at this Nokia N96 review.

Nokia N96 was finally made official yesterday (see Nokia N96 and Nokia N96 – fake). “N96 is a multimedia computer that is optimized for video and TV” the press release says. Reading the rest of the features one can easily forget the basic function of this device: a cell phone. With 16GB storage capacity this device has more memory than most other MP3 players out there and has a crystal clear 2.8″ screen which can play formats such as MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video. If 16GB is not enough for all your contacts you can upgrade to a max of 24GB thanks to the microSD card support.

For 550 € here what you can expect from N96:

  • WCDMA2100/900 (HSDPA) / EGSM900, GSM850/1800/1900 MHz (EGPRS)
  • Automatic switching between bands and modes
  • DVB-H Class C, 470-750 MHz
  • 128MB RAM, 256MB system memory
  • Battery: Nokia Battery BL-5F, 950 mAh
  • User Interface: S60 3rd edition, feature pack 2
  • Digital music player – supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WMA, album art
  • Stereo FM radio (87.5-108MHz, 76-90MHz) with support for RDS
  • video recording
  • 5MP digital camera
  • microUSB

You just need to wait for third quarter of this year.

Nokia N96

After the fake Nokia N96, we now seem to have pics of a real Nokia N96. This one, like the other high-end Nokia phones, probably also has an integrated A-GPS chip but we have no proof of that right now.

All we know at this point is that it runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and has a 5MP Carl Zeiss lens and a dual LED flash. It also has a little kickstand to for watching videos. A kickstand! What else could you ask for?
