Deluo bluetooth GPS now with Live search

DeluoGPS just launched a new product that brings Live Search for Windows Mobile and their wireless GPS device together. With Live Search users can access real-time ratings on nearby restaurants, movie show times, local weather and real-time traffic information. Combined with Deluo’s bluetooth GPS receiver your door-to-door driving directions are more ‘location aware’ and thus more useful.

There’s nothing else special about the hardware though, it includes a rechargeable Li-Ion battery which lasts about 6 hours, updates your position every second and measures 70 x 44 x 22.5 mm, and uses a SiRF Star III GPS receiver.

It is compatible with the following devices:

HTC

  • Excalibur/Dash/S620/S720
  • Magician/MDA Compact/XDA II mini/JAM
  • Mogul/XV6800/P4000/Titan

Comparison of 6 PDAs and GPS

The track we have chosen consists also of road in the countryside: the first requisite of having a vehicle capable of travelling in those roads is satisfied by the car above. For our tests we have used 6 different PDAs, ready for a very tough competition. Here they are, strictly in alphabetic order:

Fujitsu Siemens C550, the “multimedia PDA” , coupled with the GPS receiver Globalsat BT-338; N520, the entry level of FSC convergent devices; N560, currently the top of the Japanese-German vendor; HP hw6515, the first PDA-phone with AGPS; MIO A201, the budget model of the series; MIO A701, the PDA phone including a SiRFinstantFix system.

These devices are not the only electronic companions of our tests. We also have some newcomers, but we are not going to publish the results for them, due to obvious reasons. An example is the T830 by Fujitsu Siemens, still in a preliminary phase, that is expected to be available on the market by next July/September. The firmware it implements is at a too early stage to ensure an active participation to the tests and to guarantee reliable results. Side by side to this UMTS PDA phone we have included other devices: JasJar, the “king” (review); Globalsat GH-601, the wrist receiver; SD-502, the Secure Digital with a GPS antenna inside; some Nokia smartphones, and a long list of Bluetooth GPS receivers of old and new generation.

HP iPAQ hw6915 review

HP iPAQ hw6915

We had another review about the HP iPAQ hw6915 a month ago, but you just can’t read enough reviews if you consider buying one of these.

When the HP iPAQ hw6515 came out last year, it wasn’t the lack of features but rather the already one generation old operating system and lower resolution display that prevented it from becoming the smash hit the competing Palm OS Treo 650 already was and the Cingular 8125 / T-Mobile MDA would become (though all lacked the HP’s GPS). HP has mended their ways with the thoroughly modern Windows Mobile 5 iPAQ hw6915, though the 240 x 240 square resolution remains unchanged. We can forgive HP for the resolution since Windows Mobile doesn’t support 320 x 320 pixels and the form factor with front-facing keyboard requires a square display, lest the device become ungainly. Third party software support for that resolution was another thorn in the iPAQ’s side. Happily, in the many months since the 6515 came out, the 240 x 240 resolution Windows Mobile Treo 700w has come out and between the two, 3rd party software developers had good reason to update their apps to support the square screen.

Features at a Glance

The iPAQ hw6915 is a Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition device that marries a PDA with a GSM mobile phone. The iPAQ is quad band world phone which supports the 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands and will work anywhere in the world GSM service is available. The Mobile Messenger has Bluetooth 1.2, a 1.3MP camera with flash, a thumb keyboard, Mini SD slot and an internal GPS. In the US, the iPAQ ships with Pocket Streets and a 30 day demo of HP GPS Navigation System software. It runs on a 416MHz XScale processor which improves on the hw6515’s 312MHz CPU….
