DeLorme PN-40

We now have some details on the DeLorme PN-40 we talked about earlier this summer. It is expected to be available October 15th and has an MSRP of $399.95.

Included in the package are the Topo USA 7.0 software and a sample data download from the DeLorme Map Library. If you need more maps you can pay $30 for annual subscription which gives you unlimited access to USGS 7.5 minute quads, color aerial imagery, and NOAA nautical charts.

DeLorme Earthmate PN-40

DeLorme just announced Earthmate PN-40, their latest handheld GPS device which boasts a speedy dual core processor, a new GPS receiver chipset, and spacious 500MB internal flash memory which can be extended upto 32GB thanks to the SDHC card support.

Expected to hit the market as early as fall of this year Eartmate PN-40 really focused on delivering high speed map redraws…

As an example, I’ve been driving with high resolution color aerial imagery displayed on my device and have been tracking at a scale of 80 ft (very high detail) and haven’t noticed any lag time in map redraws… and that was traveling over 40 mph. While the color aerial imagery was impressive on the PN-20, I was never satisfied with the redraw time for imagery when traveling much faster than an average bike ride.

Here are the rest of the features:

  • Super high-sensitivity 32-channel Cartesio chipset by STMicroelectronics delivers near-instantaneous signal acquisition and ConstantLock™ satellite retention
  • Dual-core processor for rapid screen re-draws, even with large aerial imagery files
  • 500 MB of onboard Flash memory (1 GB total hard drive)
  • 3-axis electronic compass with included accelerometer performs when held in any position—while in motion or standing still
  • Sensitive barometric altimeter for reliably accurate altitude readings
  • Supports SDHC high-capacity SD cards—32 GB or higher
  • USB 2.0 data transfer to internal memory or SD card in device
  • More detailed onboard base map data for the U.S., now with secondary and connector roads (along with major highways and thoroughfares for the entire world)
  • 2.2″ 65K-color daylight-readable TFT screen for clarity in any light conditions
  • Topo USA 7.0 software with complete U.S topo and street maps included—no extra purchase required. Also displays USGS 7.5-min quads, aerial imagery, and NOAA nautical charts via online download from DeLorme

Street Atlas USA 2009

DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 debuted today with its Teseo chipset and 3D cockpit view which also marked the announcement of Street Atlas USA 2009 DVD and Street Atlas USA 2009 PLUS DVD. Both versions, as well as LT-40 GPS receiver support UMPC’s says DeLorme which is nothing more than saying “this camera supports YouTube”.

However there are some real new features one of which being the NavMode option. NavMode has a more sleek GUI and offers a 3D view. In addition, the LT-40 has something called a ConstantLock Signal Retention where signals as weak as -159dBm are routinely acquired and maintained without sacrificing positional accuracy while STMicroelectronics’ and DeLorme’s Kalman filtering maintains its fix even amid tall buildings, and in high radio frequency (RF) areas.

Street Atlas USA 2009 DVD is already available for sale for $70 and Street Atlas USA 2009 PLUS DVD for $100.

DeLorme announces GPS LT-40

lt-40.jpgDigital mapping and software company DeLorme today announced a new, next generation GPS receiver for laptop PC’s called GPS LT-40. The new receiver uses the STMicroelectronics Teseo chipset which promises great accuracy even in urban environments.

This new Teseo chipset is apparently one of the most sensitive receivers out there handling signals as weak as -159dBm and has a fancy ConstantLock signal retention feature.

LT-40 will be available this April for $70 but it will also include Street Atlas USA 2009 which predicts where new roads will be built in the next year. The software also has some nice features such as responding to voice commands, and giving voice directions including pronouncing street names.

new Garmin Topo Maps

garmin topo maps
GPS Information did a side by side comparison of Garmin USA Topo and the new Topo 2008, again from Garmin.

The most obvious difference is that you can now use shading to give your map a 3D look, making it easier for your eyes to comprehend the landscape. The new maps are constructed from DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data instead of a digitized version of the USGS Topo maps which was used for the older USA Topo maps.

Other differences include street names, less vectors, and contour intervals. Check out the source for more details which by the way also has comparisons with maps from other companies such as Lowrance, Magellan, DeLorme, etc…

Earthmate GPS BT-20

earthmate-gps-bt-20.jpgEarthmate last week introduced a new bluetooth GPS receiver called BT-20. The device aims to add GPS navigation functionality to laptops or other handheld devices such as mobile phones or PDAs. If the other device has no bluetooth, don’t worry. You can also hook up BT-20 via USB. You may think $170 maybe too much for a bluetooth GPS receiver these days but keep in mind this one comes bundled with Street Atlas USA 2007 PLUS DVD software. The PC-based software works with Vista (Windows 2000 and XP too) and includes a handheld device application.

Street Atlas USA 2007 provides maps of USA and Canada and comes with over 4 million points of interests. The software can do voice guidance (text-to-speech too), and has voice recognition so you can keep your hands on the wheel.

Earthmate probably had some space left over on the DVD so they decided to throw in 120 million residential and business phone listings in the U.S. and Canada as well. These addresses can also be incorporated into driving routes.
