Emil GPS treasure hunt

emil-gps
Finally a concept device that is feasible. It is actually called EMIL Experience Outdoors and it is a hand-held console that is similar to a GPS receiver with e-compass. “It allows you to form and execute treasure hunts (geocaches?), biking routes and expeditions, Hunting Mr. X in the field and Scouts Games. It can also come in handy to polish your Navigational Skills.”

See more of it at yankodesign.

maptor?

Check out this video of a concept device called Maptor. We love the idea behind this but where do maps come from, how much can the battery last trying to power a projector bulb, GPS, bluetooth… These are things the designer never cares about. You can look at some generated usage pictures and descriptions here.

Very unlikely to hit the stores anytime soon but still nice to look at:

concept device: motomap – GPS navigation with E-Ink display

motomap-bike-gps

Designed by Stephen Dettman, this concept device is called MotoMap. It is supposed to be an inexpensive alternative to those pricey bike GPS navigation systems. It uses Powerfilm flexible solar panels and E-Ink flexible displays – technologies that haven’t matured yet.

MotoMap wraps around the fuel tank and stays put thanks to the magnets in it. There’s also the adjustable strap to secure the device further. One side of the device is the display for the GPS navigation system, and the other side is reserved Powerfilm flexible solar panel. Not a bad idea.

One of the properties of flexible E-Ink is that the image won’t distort when bent and it requires little power to run. And it is almost always sunlight readable.

The controls for MotoMap is designed so that bikers won’t have to take their gloves when interacting with the device… Read More …

concept device: Velocity

velocity_gps-navigation
Have you been following the concept devices we feature here every now and then? If so you already know how we like to criticize them. Take this Velocity for example. It is supposed to be a GPS navigation system for bicycles.

The idea is that you download your routes from the internet, fit the device on your handlebar, and then get visual and audio route guidance. Here is our take on it: It looks like it is ready to snap in half, the translucent display is probably very fragile and almost impossible to read under direct sunlight, and how is this supposed to fit anywhere when you’re done with it? We do like the single hand operation though.

concept device: GPS PathQuest

pathquest
Here is another concept device that you won’t see on store shelves. Ever.

This none-existing gadget, called GPS PathQuest, features dual screens that slide over each other and uses E-ink technology to conserve battery. We see no reason why the screens have such an odd shape, or how google maps gets in the device without mention of a GSM or similar module.

Well that’s the whole idea behind “concept”. It doesn’t have to make sense…

concept device: gps fitted inhalers

gps-inhaler
Add this to the list of devices that you’re never likely to see. A GPS fitted medical inhaler.

The idea here is to track where asthma attacks strike. David Van Sickle at the University of Wisconsin-Madison recruited 4 students with asthma and convinced them to carry inhalers outfitted with GPS tracking devices to transmit their position when they were being used. The initial test went OK and his idea was funded. Now the same test will be performed with 50 people. Their device is only the size of a 9 volt battery and uses A-GPS technology so it would also work indoors.

The goal of the project is to learn something about asthma exposures, but it also is helping individuals better understand what triggers their own symptoms.

GPS enabled medical devices are becoming more common, such as the device to track Alzheimer patients or the hospital patient tracking system that can send an alert when it detects a fall… Read More …

GPS Angel v4e review

I like to consider myself a very photogenic person. I’m not vain but I enjoy being the subject of everyone’s photograph (nope, not vain at all!). Well, that was until I received a letter in the mail from the state of Arizona with an unflattering picture of me along with a speeding ticket. Which brings me to introducing the new GPS Angel v4e! This little Road legal device is a red-light and speed camera warning system. The GPS Angel uses GPS technology to warn the driver of red light and fixed speed cameras. You might wonder if it uses mystical powers to know where these cameras are actually the GPS Angel connects to your PC (Mac not supported) and using the GPS Angel software it downloads the database of Speed and Stop light cameras from the Patriots Camera Database.

next generation android phones

A lot of rumors are popping up around the internets about the new Android powered phones – all of which are of course GPS enabled. We’re happy to hear about these rumors as we would happily vote for T-Mobile’s G1 as the ‘fugliest’ high end phone if there was such a competition.

OK, here is the latest from the Android world:

Garmin: According to some sources Garmin’s highly anticipated nuviphone will keep its modified Linux OS but come second half of 2009 we can expect to see a few Android powered Garmin phones. If you remember Garmin earlier this month became a member of ‘open handset alliance’ which is the group behind the Android platform.

…We do have an Android-based phone under development; however, we are not releasing any additional information about that product at this time…

GPS? Of course. It is Garmin after all.

Sony Ericsson: Not much yet except this image of a concept device. See above. However there are some news about Sony Ericsson readying Android phones for summer of 2009. Considering Sony Ericsson also joined OHA this may have some truth to it.

HTC: The manufacturer of the original T-Mobile G1, HTC, is rumored to be working on G2, again for T-Mobile. It is said the new G2 will feature a full touch screen interface, have a trackball at the bottom, and be released as early as April.

Samsung: We just talked about the rumors about Samsung working on an Android phone. To summarize their new Android handset will resemble both Omnia and Instinct and will be available second quarter of 2009.

That’s all we’ve heard of so far. If you know of any other next-gen android phones do let us know.

UPDATE:
HKC: HKC Pearl is a new one.

gadgets that don’t exist: Seek

This is a concept device form Jukka Roitto. It is called Seek. Seek is designed for travelers in mind; uses GPS system to locate restaurants, theaters, clubs, etc. Another feature that Seek promises to have translation to communicate better with locals.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a device like this with high speed internet connection for maps, low power consumption GPS receiver, voice recognition for address entry? Thinking of it we already possess all these technologies. The only problem is that pull out semi transparent screen. When that becomes main stream expect to see this in store shelves.

SC-200 Speed Camera Advisor

GlobalTop of Taiwan just introduced the SC-200 speed camera advisor. The concept of SC-200 is pretty simple; no displays, no buttons, no nothing. Just a few LEDs and a speaker that can beep. Of course this makes the device very affordable and easy to use. And sometimes the most simple thing can be very functional.

SC-200 contains the whole speed camera database for Europe in its memory – and in case you want updates, it provides the interface for that too.

SC-200 also can be as the G-mouse for navigation by using the USB interface, GPS position information via the USB cable will be delivered onto host; you just need to link the SC-200 with your notebook and activate the navigation map program.

Here are some more features and specs:

  • 66 channels high performance GPS chip
  • -163dB
  • m GPS engine
  • volume control & mute function
  • charges through cigarette lighter
  • mini USB interface for database update
  • embedded GPS antenna
  • different beeps for different distance from speed traps
  • speed limit notification
