Review: Qstarz BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder

qstarz-1
For people interested in maintaining an active lifestyle, Qstarz has introduced the BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder. Basically, it is an updated version of the Qstarz BT-Q1300 Travel Recorder Nano (reviewed here in September 2008) that now includes the QSports software package and a bright orange armband. The ability to adjust the GPS signal sampling rate (for more or less accuracy) is also a new feature. I will not bother rehashing the device basics since it is virtually identical to the BT-Q1300 and I don’t have much to add to Gautam’s already good review. Instead, I will focus on the Qsports software.

My first impression of the Qsports software was that it was very easy to use. To begin, you first create a new user profile. This allows you to track separate workout plans and sessions for multiple persons. It prompts you for relevant information used for fitness calculations. You can then begin to import the logged tracks from the GPS device. Read More …

ATP GPS PhotoFinder Mini Review

atp-gps-photo_box
Have you ever looked through old photos and wondered, “Where did I take this picture again?” If the answer is yes, then allow me to introduce you to the GPS PhotoFinder mini, the latest geotagging gadget from ATP Electronics. This handy little device will record your GPS position and with the help of a standalone docking station, add it to the image’s EXIF metadata. No need to remember where you shot that photo. After matching the GPS coordinates to the photo’s date and time stamp, your pictures can then be copied from the memory card to a PC and used with a geotagging compatible website such as Flickr. The PhotoFinder mini can also create ‘KML’ route files that are exportable to Google Maps and Google Earth – no computer required.

Qstarz BT-Q1300 review

Although it’s not Dolce & Gabbana, the black and gold Qstarz BT-Q1300 Travel Recorder Nano is a sleek and stylish gadget that even my sassy girlfriend wouldn’t mind carrying around. That is of course if she knew what a Travel Recorder was.

Basically this little guy is a GPS logger; a gadget that records your whereabouts as you travel. Although this is cheaper than hiring a private detective to follow a loved one around, travel recorders serve another useful purpose; Combine the your digital camera with the BT-Q1300 and the Qstarz software (included with the BT-Q1300) and you have yourself a great way to keep track of where your pictures were taken. The Qstarz software matches the timestamp of your picture with the data logged on the BT-Q1300 and updates your photograph file with GPS location information. No more having to remember where you were that night when someone took that embarrassing picture of you passed out at a bar. Even better, the Qstarz software will map out your locations on Google Earth so you can remember how to get back to that fine establishment to pick up your credit card the next morning (Just a warning: A 25% tip was probably automatically added to your tab).

Okay maybe there are better scenarios for this useful gadget, like taking a photography trek through Yosemite National Park. With the BT-Q1300 you’ll never have to take notes where you are when you took a picture. Just click away and use the software to add the latitude and longitude coordinates to your pictures and if you have a Blackberry handy you can also use the GPS logger to show you where you are on a map. But more on that later, first let’s take a look at the features of the BT-Q1300:
