voip on blaupunkt TravelPilot 700?

- by Albert Lim –

Blaupunkt just released the news that its new Blaupunkt TravelPilot 700 we mentioned several months ago is now shipping with VOIP support. Before you ask ‘how’s that gonna work’ keep in mind that this GPS navigation system has a WLAN module and the rest of the western civilization is usually more advanced than the U.S. when it comes to connection speeds.

The device can be configured quickly and used internationally – including unlimited surfing on the Internet, which means that the TravelPilot 700 can be used to access Internet radio and podcasts as well as e-mail. In addition, Internet telephony (Voice over Internet Protocol) provides free telephone service to all over the world via computer networks (VoIP-to-VoIP). The mobile Office solutions offered range from such applications as Word, Excel, Powerpoint and a PDF reader (Portable Document Format) via an Internet browser and e-mail account right on up to functions like a calendar, a clock with an alarm function and Paint programs.

Other cool features of TravelPilot 700 include a video camera that provides route guidance on the actual road picture, bluetooth, and DVB-T receiver for watching TV, speech recognition that compensates for accent differences when you’re in other countries, and a light sensor to adjust screen brightness automatically.

This is the screenshot from the new Blaupunkt Travel Pilot 700. They call this “video navigation“. The unit has a video camera on its back facing the windshield which captures live footage of the road just ahead of you. And then navigation prompts are superimposed on to this video feed. This must be reality view at its best.

Other really innovative features implemented on blaupunkt travel pilot 700 include the ability to recognize traffic signs, voice control, WLAN, DVB-T receiver, live traffic information, and blutooth. We don’t know what kind of hardware is in this device but it better have a fast CPU. All those image and video processing requires a lot of juice.

It looks like Blaupunkt is raising the bar when it comes to GPS navigation systems. You must see this video:

Blaupunkt TravelPilot Lucca 3.5 Edition
OMG it is not a rectangle! German Blaupunkt just introduced a new GPS navigation system called TravelPilot Lucca 3.5 Edition that is round. We do not know what benefit this may offer other than taking up more space on your dash but I guess Blaupunkt just wanted to come up with something out of the ordinary.

The specs for Lucca 3.5 are however pretty standard offering an anti-glare, high-contrast 3.5″ TFT touch screen color display in 4:3 format, Centrality Atlas III Dual Core 400 MHz processor, mapping for UK/ Ireland and major roads of Europe pre-installed and detailed maps of other 21 Western European counties offered on a separate DVD.

More features:

  • SD/SDHC/MMC card reader
  • Theft-protected thanks to PIN code (yeah, that’ll stop’em!)
  • Integrated TMC receiver
  • Display of speed limits with visual and acoustic speed limit warnings
  • Error-tolerant input of city names

We do not know when this will available in the U.S. but it sure will come out in Europe first.

Blaupunkt will be introducing a new GPS navigation system in the U.S. which they showcased at CES 2007. It is called TravelPilot Lucca 5.2, and if we’re not mistaken it has been around in Europe for a while now.

The new TravelPilot Lucca 5.2 will include entire maps of U.S. and Canada pre-loaded. It will feature multimedia capabilities such as video playback, support for rear-view camera, MP3 player, and image viewer.

The Lucca 5.2 will ship with a special car cradle that can connect to your car stereo and provide multimedia support through your car’s speakers. Lucca also has good support for graphics. The maps looks smooth and well animated and you have the ability to view it in 2D or 3D.

Other features of the software include ability to plan trips with multiple stops, speed limit warnings, and ability to download speed camera locations which will be available via internet this year.

UPDATE: (Jan 12th 2007) Apparently the model shown in the picture above is Blaupunkt’s next generation model which is expected to come to U.S. late in 2007 (Q3 or Q4). Currently they have the TravelPilot Lucca MP3 Edition which began shipping in December 2006. MSRP for that one is $700.

Blaupunkt TravelPilot Lucca MP3 Edition GPS navigation system

lucca-blaupunkt-493.jpg
Don’t get your hopes up just yet. This is not offered in North America. If you live in Europe, you can continue reading. The TravelPilot Lucca MP3 Edition from Blaupunkt is supposed to be one of their high end GPS navigation systems. The Edition unit offers European street level mapping of 26 European countries pre-loaded onto the 2GB internal memory. A nice feature is the SmartCradle, an accessory which allows for a hard-wire connection from the device to the vehicle’s audio system for voice guidance avoiding any unsightly wires on the dash which also features speed dependent voice volume output (GALA).

TravelPilot Lucca comes with an anti-glare 3.5″ color touch screen display and can play MP3 or WMA files while navigating. The way to transfer music to your Lucca is to use the MMC/SD slot, and while you’re at it, fell free throw in some family pictures because there’s an JPEG picture viewer on board.

Here are some other features:

  • Integrated loudspeaker and GPS receiver
  • Display of traffic sign information
  • Route planning with multi-stop destinations
  • “Go Home” function
  • Speed limit warning (for fixed speed limits)
  • Maps can be viewed in 2D or 3D
  • Pedestrian mode: Take the unit out of your car and “walk the last mile”

blaupunkt TravelPilot DX-V

travelpilot-dx-v-558.jpg
You won’t find this in North America but you can get it far far away, in Australia. Called the TravelPilot DX-V this satellite navigation system features a 6.5 inch TFT-LCD colour LCD in 16:9 format which can support a split screen format (map/ arrow) and including an automatic traffic congestion avoidance function via RDS/TMC.

Unlike most other GPS systems that solely rely on GPS signals, the Blaupunkt DX-V also utilizes vehicle speed wire so it still knows where it is even when traveling through a tunnel. It also uses a gyroscope, which gives the system a three dimensional image of the terrain.
