AVIC-S2: $1 more for 1GB less space

pioneer-avic-s2-043.jpg
The Pioneer AVIC-S2 we announced last month is now officially on Pioneer’s website for a suggested retail price of $400. Just next to it you’ll find the older AVIC-S1 which has the suggested retail price of $399. So what’s the difference between the two? Well for starters the new AVIC-S2 comes with a 1GB memory card as opposed to a 2GB card that the older AVIC-S1 offered.

The newer AVIC-S2 for that same reason comes with about 300,000 less POIs but it does include Hawaii and Alaska maps unlike the older map. The only new feature we could find on AVIC-S2 was the MP3 player functionality which requires you to bring your MP3’s on a different SD card. Oops. I guess that means no navigation if you want to use that feature. Good news is you can still purchase AVIC-S1 on Amazon for only $268.

Pioneer announces AVIC-S2

Pioneer just announced a successor to AVIC-S1, simply called AVIC-S2. The new AVIC-S2 looks very similar to S1 (AVIC-S1 now for $262 on Amazon), in fact almost identical. The only new feature we could detect on the new S2 was the fact that it can now play your MP3 files.

Some other differences:

  • AVIC-S2 comes with 1GB SD card (used to be 2GB on AVIC-S1)
  • AVIC-S2 has 1.7 million POI (used to be 1.5 million on AVIC-S1?) compression perhaps…..

The AVIC-S2 is available for a suggested price of $399 beginning late April ‘07.

Pioneer AVIC-S1 on your bike

Some of our readers integrated a Pioneer AVIC-S1 on their bicycle to navigate through the streets of Boston area and wanted to share their excitement with you. It looks like all you need is the AVIC window mount bracket, some zipties, and a hmm, a bicycle. It has bluetooth integration too:

the bluetooth/handsfree integration works great with my phone, so I can take calls with my phone safely stuck in my backpack.

You can get an AVIC-S1 from Amazon for $454.

pioneer avic-s1 gets good rating

pioneer-avic-s1-954.jpg
On a recent review Pioneer’s AVIC-S1 GPS navigation system got the ‘good’ rating from the editors. Pioneer is trying to change to focus and target customers who are looking for cheaper navigation systems that are not necessarily integrated into the dashboard and have huge screens. At a list price of $600 the AVIC-S1 is just that but nothing more; lacking a few functions such as poor POI interface.

Here are some of the features the review mentions:

  • 3.5-inch touch screen
  • SiRF Star III GPS
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone interface
  • support for multiple-stop itineraries
  • ability to block specific roads
  • 1.5 million POI database
  • 14 built-in languages
  • voice prompts

One of my big disappointments with the AVIC-S1 was with its handling of POIs. Although there are 21 categories, some of them, such as car dealerships and motorcycle dealerships, seem less than useful compared with POI categories on other devices. For example, I searched within the Hotel and Motel categories near my home. No matches were found. But when I searched all categories, it found 11 hotel/motels within 1.8 miles of my home. Interestingly, the POI database didn’t include phone numbers—something that I consider a real oversight for a GPS with Bluetooth hands-free capabilities. Additionally, you couldn’t search by name for a nearby POI.

Portable navigation system from Pioneer: AVIC-S1

AVIC-S1

French site caraudiovideo, whose specialty is pretty self-evident, have information on a new Windows CE-powered Pioneer GPS receiver that is supposedly one of the first from the company to include built-in Bluetooth. The AVIC-S1 is a “portable” model (meaning you can port it from vehicle to vehicle, but not on your geocaching expeditions) that features a 320 x 240 touchscreen, SiRF III chip for greater accuracy, and what seems to be 2GB of flash memory preloaded with European maps. Any of the included points-of-interest can be dialed on your cellphone via Bluetooth, and a choice of 17 guidance languages will help you brush up on the native tongues as you travel around the continent. It’s not really clear when this product will be released (if it’s not out already), or how much it will go for, but until a US version is announced, those details are a moot point to the majority of you anyway.
