Altina GBT-709

altina-gbt709.jpg
One of the most popular bluetooth GPS receivers from Taiwanese manufacturer Altina is the GBT-709 these days. With the prices of these devices getting lower and lower each day there’s no reason for you to not have one. You can pick up Altina GBT-709 for as low as $50.

Just like most other bluetooth GPS receivers Altina GBT-709 works by getting a location fix from the satellites and then sends this location data (in NMEA0183 V2.2 format) to your handheld device via bluetooth. Bluetooth GPS receivers do not know how to get you from point A to point B. Therefore you are going to need some sort of navigation software to pinpoint you on a map, or give you directions by making use of the street level mapping data it stores.

Let’s have a short look at the specs of GBT-709: First off it measures 69 x 50 x 19 mm which is not huge but we’ve seen slimmer ones. It uses the SiRF Star III GPS receiver chipset and has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can last up to 12 hours. The receivers’s sensitivity is -175dBW and it can track upto 20 satellites at once.

Altina A680 GPS navigation with 2MP digital camera

altina-a680.jpg
Taiwanese GPS manufacturer Altina just unveiled a new GPS navigation system called A680. Altina A680 uses the highly sensitive and industry standard SiRF Star III GPS receiver chipset and relies on a 400MHz Samsung processor for route calculations.

Unlike other models from Altina, A680 features a wide 4″ screen, and adds in a 2MP digital camera on the back of the device. Extra features don’t end here: The A680 even has an FM transmitter to hear voice directions over your car audio system and an integrated MP3 player and MP4 movie player. It doesn’t feature a hard disk but comes with a SD slot to bring in your media.

Hopefully Altina will be able find a distributor in U.S. and Europe; it sure would be a good competition for the big names.

The receiver chipset is SiRF Star IIe; we know it is not the latest but it’ll allow you 9 hours of continuous usage while tracking 12 satellites at a time.
